The White House is set to receive a $1.6 million federal contract to install and repair a roof of the historic Capitol Building that will be used as a “flagship” for the National Park Service, The Associated Press reported Thursday.
The $200 million contract is the second such award to the U.S. Capitol for Capitol Hill, and is one of the largest in history.
The Capitol is the oldest federal building in the nation and was built by George Washington, the son of former President Thomas Jefferson.
It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who was a prominent architect in the White City during the American Civil War.
A contract was awarded to BAE Systems Inc., the British defense contractor, for the roof project that will run through the 2021-2022 term, which ends June 30.
The project will be managed by the U-S.
Department of Defense, which is one year into a $5.5 billion procurement to build and operate a replacement for the historic Washington Monument, which was built in 1884.
It’s a $400 million project that’s expected to be completed by the end of 2021, but the work won’t be complete until 2024, according to the contract.
“This is the first time we have had a U.K. contractor build a Capitol roof,” U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley said in a statement Thursday.
“The new roof is a truly historic piece of engineering and design.”
The roof is expected to take two years to install, and the project will also include work to repair existing damage to the historic building.
It is the largest federal contract ever awarded to a government facility, and it’s the first since the White Houses original roof was installed in 1911, according the Associated Press.
The roof has been in use for decades, but this year, President Donald Trump decided to make the roof more accessible to the public and to the Capitol Police, which oversee the Capitol grounds.
The Capitol Police have been using the roof as a lookout point for protesters and demonstrators.
It has been used to protect the Capitol, as well as the Washington Monument and the Capitol Rotunda.
The building’s new roof has become a symbol of Trump’s presidency, and Haley has been touting the roof to help people understand the “bigger picture.”
